STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Mark Crescitelli’s great-grandfather, Frank Lombardi, a native of Maddolone, Italy, sold Indian Motorcycles from a Richmond Avenue storefront in Bulls Head in 1914 for just $200 each.
In the mid-1940s, Indian Motorcycle was undergoing financial difficulties and was subsequently sold. But one of the oldest brands of motorcycles was revived in 2011, when Polaris Industries acquired the Indian name.
That’s when Crescitelli, who has worked in the motorcycle industry for more than 30 years, thought about opening a dealership with the brand of bike that his great-grandfather first brought to the borough.
Crescitelli’s business, Gotham Motorcycles — New York City’s only Indian Motorcycle dealer — will open next month in Tompksinville, he said. The shop will also be the first Victory and Slingshot motorcycle dealer in the city, he said.
“I wanted to go back to my roots, and I wanted to bring another great motorcycle brand to the city,” said Crescitelli, whose uncle owns a a nearby Harley Davidson dealership.
